naar behoren was?\u2019<br \/>\nHij kwam voorbij de verpleegpost waar ik in overleg was met het team, tikte tegen het raam en wees me aan. Ik ging naar hem toe.<br \/>\nGelukkig kon ik volgen, ik kende het verhaal van Marcel. En dat hij net mij aanwees, verbaasde me niet. Tal van pati\u00ebnten vroeger vertelden me dat ze me bij de eerste kennismaking \u2018een strenge\u2019 vonden (en dat het nadien gelukkig wel meeviel \u263a\ufe0f). Daarom dacht ook Marcel dat ik \u2018de baas\u2019 was.<br \/>\n\u2018Of z\u2019n werk naar behoren was?\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018Absoluut! Ik ben zo blij dat je ons helpt. En je werkt nog nauwkeurig ook!\u2019 \u2018Hoeveel moet ik je?\u2019.<br \/>\nDat hoefde niet, hij wou gewoon weten of ik content was\u2026 dan hij ook.<br \/>\nMarcel is bewoner in een woonzorgcentrum. Elke namiddag stond hij aan de lift te wachten, op weg naar huis. Medewerkers trachtten tevergeefs uit te leggen dat hij hier woont. Dat dit z\u2019n thuis is. Maar hij begreep het niet. Hij was z\u2019n thuis kwijt\u2026 hij was in de war en verdrietig.<br \/>\nMarcel is een behulpzame man. Naast z\u2019n carri\u00e8re lang het Vaderland te dienen, helpt hij iedereen en overal. Ook op de afdeling helpt hij met kleine taakjes. En als de taakjes (z\u2019n werk in zijn beleving) gedaan zijn, dan is het logisch dat je naar huis gaat. Niet?<br \/>\nHoe kunnen we Marcel zich thuis laten voelen op de tweede verdieping?<br \/>\n\u2018Kan en wil hij niet helpen in de wasserette, beneden in het WZC?\u2019, opperde iemand uit het team. En zo werd Marcel collega in de wasserette waar hij 1x per week enkele uren meehelpt. Het was in het begin wel \u2018creapy\u2019, vertelde een collega van Marcel. Wie is hij? Wat zeggen we tegen hem? Creapy werd creamy. Ze vinden het best wel fijn dat Marcel bij \u2018hun\u2019 team hoort.<br \/>\nNa de koffiepauze \u2615\ufe0f samen brengt een collega hem naar boven, naar \u2018huis\u2019.<br \/>\nMarcel wacht niet ochtends stond Paula in de keuken boterhammen te smeren. Die maakte ze met veel liefde klaar voordat ik het huis uitging om de vroege shift te werken. Ja, ik heb gans mijn leven vroege shiften gedaan en steeds maakte ze mijn schoofzak \ud83e\udd6aklaar.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Het is het verhaal van Leon. Sinds kort woont zijn vrouw in het WZC. Leon vertelt deze anekdote tijdens \u00e9\u00e9n van de workshops behoeften gebaseerde zorg. Het team is in voorbereiding voor implementatie. Tot mijn (fijne) verrassing waren er naast de teamleden ook drie familieleden aanwezig. Elks met hun eigen verhaal. Tijdens de opleiding benadrukken we dat veranderend gedrag een uiting van een innerlijke kracht kan zijn. Iedereen heeft krachten, ook mensen met dementie.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Paula wist duidelijk niet meer hoe ze zich moest organiseren in de keuken\u2019 vervolgde Leon. De boterhammen stonden dagelijks klaar, alleen herinnerde ze zich niet dat ik al twintig jaren met pensioen ben en was alles een puinhoop als ik \u2018s ochtends beneden kwam. Ik kon niet meer slapen omdat ze elke nacht weer opstond\u2026\u2019. En zo getuigde Leon hoe Paula haar kracht &#8211; haar zorg voor haar man &#8211; tot een opname in het WZC geleid had.<\/p>\n<p>Het werd even stil. Maar geen onbehaaglijke stilte. W\u00e9l \u00e9\u00e9n die respect voor zijn getuigenis weerspiegelde. Medewerkers \u00e9n familie samen in opleiding: het was de mooiste en sterkste vorm van familieparticipatie die ik tot nu toe mocht meemaken.<br \/>\nDialoog met een grote Christine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ludo verloor twee jaar geleden zijn echtgenote. Sindsdien woont hij alleen. Met de goede zorgen van zijn zoon Bob, lukt het wel thuis. Ludo kreeg immers drie jaar geleden een shunt voor normale drukhydrocefalie. Plots belt zijn zoon Bob \u2013 een oud-collega uit het ziekenhuis &#8211; me op. Of ik even tijd heb? Ik luister. Bob maakt zich zorgen. Zijn vader slaapt bijzonder veel, ook overdag. Zijn geheugen is best nog oke, maar hij is zo inactief. De huisarts vertelde dat hij het moest accepteren. Je vader is wel al 78 jaar he\u2026 Wat wil je nog? Wat wil Bob nog? Dat zijn vader kan blijven wonen op de plaats waar hij zich thuis voelt natuurlijk. Is dat alles, vroeg ik aan Bob? Wil je dan niet ook dat hij zich beter voelt, dat hij terug meer geniet van het leven? Heb je al eens aan het geriatrisch dagziekenhuis gedacht? Zij bekijken vanuit interdisciplinaire perspectief zijn gezondheid en welbevinden. Misschien loopt de shunt niet meer af of is het rouwproces om je mama nog intens aanwezig\u2026 Slaperigheid hoef je niet te accepteren. Bob klonk opgelucht. Hij had weer perspectief en gaat er maandag onmiddellijk werk van maken. Ik heb er vertrouwen in. Het wordt beter<\/p>\n<p>.<br \/>\nIrma heeft zorgen. Wat als ze niet genoeg geld heeft om te leven? En wat als haar man overlijdt? Hoe moet ze dan alles regelen? Re\u00eble angsten die het helemaal van haar overnemen. Met diepe angsten en waangedachten werd ze in het ziekenhuis opgenomen.\u00a0 Toen ik toevallig op de afdeling kwam, klampte het team me aan. De moed zit in onze schoenen. Haar drang om weg te lopen is zo groot. We weten het niet meer\u2026\u00a0 Wie is Irma vroeg ik? Buiten wat medische gegevens en haar rol als moeder en oma, kreeg ik weinig informatie. We praatten over manieren om desondanks de angsten toch verbinding te maken met haar \u00e9n met haar dochter, die momenteel wat in de weerstand zat. Ik kom eind deze week terug langs, zei ik. Om te weten hoe het met jullie gaat. En om te weten wie Irma is. Uit dialoog met de familie bleek dat Irma altijd al wat een paniekerig type geweest, maar verder was het vooral een warme dame die houdt van gezelligheid, samenzijn en rust vindt in de tuin. Uit de testen blijkt dat ze cognitief nog goed scoort. Het is de bedoeling dat ze op punt gesteld wordt zodat ze weer rustig is en naar huis kan. Is dat alles, vroeg ik? Je kan toch met de angsten aan de slag? En familie ondersteunen in het omgaan mat paniekaanvallen? Kunnen we niet focussen op een beter leven in plaats van de context die weer onder controle is? Het voelde verwarrend aan voor het team, dat zag ik. Maar ik heb er vertrouwen in. Ze gaan er over nadenken. Dat zeker. Het gaat beter met hen.<\/p>\n<p>Het was mijn eerste ontmoeting met Christine. Ze woont hier nog niet zolang, in het woonzorgcentrum. Bruno, de hoofdverpleegkundige, vraagt of ik tijd heb om een analyse van complex gedrag te begeleiden: Christine. Zo kan ze hier niet blijven. Ze roept en snauwt naar medewerkers en bewoners. Dit is niet leefbaar. Vertel\u2026\u00a0 Na wat voorbeelden over haar gedrag komen haar wanen en hallucinaties aan bod. Ze denkt dat haar familie haar wil vergiftigen en bij momenten bukt ze zich om te schuilen voor vallende bommen. Is ze bang? Vraag ik. Bang? Als je die vraag aan haar stelt, antwoordt ze: doodsbang. Dit is inderdaad niet leefbaar, maar in eerste instantie voor haar. Hoe zouden jullie reageren als je voortdurend doodsangsten ervaart? We draaiden de vraag om: \u2018Waar kan ze naartoe?\u2019, veranderde in: \u2018Wat kan haar helpen?\u2019. Bruno vond uiteindelijk de naam van de psychiater die haar eerder al begeleidde. Hij nam in overleg met de huisarts contact op en vertelde vanuit het lijden van Christine. De psychiater begreep hem en begeleidt nu even vanop afstand. Ze houden contact. \u2018Hou me op de hoogte\u2019, zegt de arts. Bruno en het team staan er niet langer alleen voor. Ik heb er vertrouwen in. Het wordt beter. Het zal langzaam gaan, maar het wordt beter.<\/p>\n<p>Zorgen in de zorg, ze zijn er overal. Ze zijn normaal. Dankjewel voor het vertrouwen, voor het kwetsbaar tonen van die machteloosheid, voor het tonen van de moed om hulp te vragen.<\/p>\n<p>Het was een intense week, maar ik heb er vertrouwen in: op deze <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bewondering voor de zorgverleners die nauwgezet stapels gedragsobservatielijsten invulden.<br \/>\nUren zaten we samen en met regelmaat werden verhalen verteld over specifieke gedragingen van bewoners. Het waren vooral nuances die ze aanbrachten. De subtiliteit van gedrag. Boeiend.<br \/>\nIk hou van verhalen.<\/p>\n<p>Verwondering wanneer afdelingsverantwoordelijken vertelden dat een aantal bewoners niet deelnemen aan project Odette omdat het thema dementie onbespreekbaar is met hun familie. \u2018Echt!?\u2019 vroeg ik dan. \u2018Hoe kan je nu persoonsgerichte zorg bieden als dementie een taboe is?\u2019 Ik voelde hoe boos ik werd. Een briesende leeuw. Elke keer opnieuw. Ik begreep het niet.<\/p>\n<p>11\/11 Remembrance day. Opdat we nooit zouden vergeten wie voor ons geleefd heeft.<\/p>\n<p>Wanneer iemand in je omgeving de diagnose van dementie krijgt, is het duidelijk: langzaam maar zeker verliezen we de grip op het beeld dat we van die persoon hebben. Hij of zij wordt steeds moeilijker bereikbaar. Het gevoel van verbondenheid vervaagt als een dikke mist die nooit meer opklaart. Een levende verlieservaring. Het ontkennen of vermijden van de diagnose beschermt tegen de pijn van het verlies. Tegen angst voor de waarheid.<\/p>\n<p>Tegelijk hopen we dat diegenen waar we zoveel om geven, de beste zorgen krijgen. Dat ze ook in het woonzorgcentrum een gevoel van gelukkig-zijn ervaren. Personen met dementie kunnen zeker een gevoel van gelukkig-zijn ervaren. Maar dat vraagt wel een gerichte aanpak. Een zorg die veiligheid biedt, die zich richt op gevoel en emoties. Daar heb je in eerste instantie erkenning voor het dementieproces nodig.<\/p>\n<p>In zijn boek Being Mortal schreef Atul Gawande dat de uitdaging bij het ouder worden \u2013 of het nu over jezelf gaat of over iemand die je graag ziet \u2013 zit in het beslissen wat het belangrijkste is: wat je vreest of wat je hoopt. Ik voeg daar nog een extra uitdaging aan toe: handelen naar wat je beslist hebt. En voor project Odette is dit duidelijk hoop.<\/p>\n<p>Maar ik begrijp het wel, die ontkenning. En neen, het is geen taboe. Het is een heel gewone reactie om jezelf te beschermen tegen de pijn van het verlies. De leeuw is weer rustig.<\/p>\n<p>11\/11 Wapenstilstand.<\/p>\n<p>In dit veld met klaprozen is elke bloem symbool voor een persoon met dementie. Dat we niet vergeten wat ze voor ons betekenen, ook m\u00e9t dementie. Zelfs al is het mistig en zien we het niet, we voelen het wel. Elke bloem biedt steun voor iedereen die angst heeft om de waarheid te erkennen. Een kleine dosis opium om de pijn te verzachten. Elke bloem beweegt langzaam heen en weer als een soldaat \u2013 zorgverlener &#8211; die strijdt voor de hoop op een kwaliteitsvol leven voor iedereen. Ik besluit om kennis te maken, klop aan en ga binnen.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Hoi, ik ben Kathleen. Ik wil graag kennismaken met je.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bert zit in de zetel, zijn ene been gekruist over het andere been, en dan weer omgekeerd. De kamer is leeg. Een bed, een zetel en een TV. Echt als een thuis voelt het nog niet aan.<\/p>\n<p>Bert begint te vertellen over de laatste maanden thuis, hoe hij zijn heup brak en ge\u00efsoleerd geraakte, over zijn zelfmoordgedachten, over zijn toffe buurman die voor hem boodschappen deed, over zijn twee zonen die hij ontzettend graag ziet, over zijn tijd aan de universiteit, over zijn werk. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hij spreekt, ik luister en heel af en toe onderbreekt hij zijn woorden en herhaalt hij: \u2018<em>Ja, ik ben introvert, dat maakt het niet zo gemakkelijk\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Het verhaal gaat verder: over zijn immense platencollectie, over zijn muziek. Dat mist hij wel, plaatjes draaien in zijn huis. Ik vraag hem welke muziek hij graag luistert. Verrast ben ik als hij zegt The Rolling Stone, the Beatles, the Who, David Garrick. Ik merk dat open vragen veel inspanning vergen en ik wissel af met gesloten vragen. Ik ontdek dat Jan chef is geweest van een boerderij met koeien en heel veel paarden en heb het gevoel dat Jan dit werk met hart en ziel heeft gedaan. Als ik dit teruggeef aan hem, begint hij te wenen. Ik heb hem geraakt\u2026 Wat beleeft hij? Wat gaat erin hem om? Wat voelt hij\u2026 Jan vindt de woorden niet.<\/p>\n<p>In het levensverhaal van Jan lees ik dat hij boekhouder was.
